Why Our Play for Care Tools Didn't Stop When the Emergency Response Programme Did
Most disaster response programmes have a clear end date. Play for Care, delivered by Ecogames in Aceh Tamiang in January 2026, was designed so its impact wouldn't stop there. As KUN Humanity System+ concluded its direct support in the region, the Ecogames team worked with local partners in Aceh to keep the programme's tools in active use rather than packing them away once the funded sessions ended. Most of the toolkit, including activity sheets, games, and the facilitation gu

Designing Accessible Trauma Relief Tools for Post-Disaster, Low-Resource Settings
Designing meaningful engagement for a classroom is one challenge. Designing for a village three days after a massive flash flood, with facilitators arriving on short notice and no guarantee of a quiet space to work, is another. Alam Santi's Ecogames' Play for Care Facilitation Guide, developed as part of the 2026 response to flash flooding and landslides in Aceh Tamiang, offers a working example of what education design for unpredictable conditions looks like in practice. The

How Ecogames Play for Care Works in Post Disaster Settings
Following flooding and landslides in Aceh Tamiang, Ecogames designed and delivered Play for Care, a play-based emotional support programme for children, in partnership with KUN Humanity System+ and with support from Nuanu Social Fund. Between January 2 and 17, 2026, the programme reached 248 children aged two to thirteen across five villages: Desa Alur Tani 1, Tanjung Gelumpang, Sunting, Serba and Pengidam. The approach was built on a simple premise: children process trauma t

Trauma Relief Education Learnings from the Aceh Floods 2025
After severe floods and landslides displaced families across Aceh Tamiang, Ecogames partnered with KUN Humanity System+ to bring play-based support to children in five villages. The programme, Play for Care, used trauma-sensitive games and creative activities to help children reconnect and regain a sense of safety through drawing, storytelling and play. A few snapshots from the days in the field.... Facilitator Cece led several of the sessions. A month after one visit to Desa

Disaster Risk Reduction Education with Magical Muppets
In 1999, Alam Santi co-founder Petra Schneider founded IDEP Foundation, a local NGO that responded to over 30 major disasters in Indonesia. While at IDEP for over two decades, Petra and fellow Alam Santi co-founder Gede Sugiartha led the design and production of community education handbooks, comic books and films built to raise awareness of the early signs of natural disasters and the correct response to them. In 2006, IDEP collaborated with Trocaire, Jesuit Refugee Service

Community Resilience: Before, During and After Disasters
Community resilience is often viewed through the narrow lens of emergency response: the immediate scramble to help people once a disaster has already hit. In practice, it is a much broader concept, encompassing economic, social and political dimensions; at its core is a community's capacity to recover and rebuild. Disaster resilience cannot be separated from risk reduction. The two are part of the same ongoing process, not two different stages of work. Economic, social and po

Disaster Education and Solar Kits at Bali Evacuation Camps
In 2017, Bali's highest and most sacred mountain began to erupt. The eruption of Mount Agung, whose name means "Paramount," forced over 100,000 people to leave their homes and stay in evacuation centres to avoid the hazards of further impending eruptions. A grassroots initiative called Mount Agung Relief (MAR) was formed to respond to evacuee needs, which Alam Santi co-founder Petra Schneider helped to coordinate. This film showcases work supported by MAR, where Alam Santi c

Nazava : Super Affordable Drinking Water Filters
Water is the source of all life, but in the tropics most people have at some point doubted the quality of their water. Meanwhile, long term use of bottled water is costly and results in tons of single-use plastic waste. Even if the water is obtained from a suitable source, it will not be readily accessible to the majority of households and is at risk of contamination during transport or storage. Nazava has created an innovative drinking water filter that is highly effective a
