Why Our Play for Care Tools Didn't Stop When the Emergency Response Programme Did

Most disaster response programmes have a clear end date. Play for Care, delivered by Ecogames in Aceh Tamiang in January 2026, was designed so its impact wouldn't stop there.

As KUN Humanity System+ concluded its direct support in the region, the Ecogames team worked with local partners in Aceh to keep the programme's tools in active use rather than packing them away once the funded sessions ended. Most of the toolkit, including activity sheets, games, and the facilitation guide, has now been transferred to Sophie's Sunset Library, a community-led space in Aceh Besar Regency roughly eleven hours from where the original sessions took place.

The handoff wasn't incidental. Sophie's Sunset Library already runs regular reading sessions and mobile book distribution for children in coastal communities, and its team brings its own experience in disaster mitigation education, including tsunami preparedness, and an existing relationship with schools across the region. That made it a natural home for tools built specifically for trauma-sensitive, community-based engagement.

The library also maintains an active volunteer network reaching several disaster-affected areas. As resources allow, there are plans to extend the tools through that network into North Aceh and Pidie Regency, taking the programme beyond its original five villages without requiring a fresh deployment each time.

This reflects a principle behind how Ecogames approaches this kind of work: tools built for a single response are only doing part of their job. Designing them to be adaptable and reusable, and handing them to organisations already embedded in the communities they're meant to serve, is what enables a programme's impact to continue well past its funded phase.
