Who is behind PT Sundaya?

Sundaya has been developing and manufacturing renewable energy solutions in Indonesia since 1993. Today Sundaya has a team of about 200 people, mostly based at the Sundaya factory in Sentul, West Java, who collaborate with professional, creative, and passionate engineers in Sweden, Singapore, and China. Sundaya’s main marketing and education arm is managed by PT Alam Santi, based in Bali.

Today, Sundaya products are distributed all over the world, primarily to locations with little, or unreliable, existing electrification infrastructure. To meet our team and learn more about our production systems feel free to have a watch of this film….

Are Sundaya products waterproof?

Most of the products are splash water-proof, and can be used indoors or outdoors. Sundaya products are designed to be robust and durable in or outdoors in all weather conditions, when all cables are plugged in securely. The JouleBox battery hub and television are the two exceptions.

What’s Sundaya’s mission?

At Sundaya we believe that in an increasingly electrified world, energy independence and literacy is a cornerstone to building a more equitable world. We envision a world with clean, safe, fossil-fuel-free electricity accessible for all, and are always striving to make innovative products that will help people gain energy independence and increase their energy literacy.

Our Joule-based unified energy measurement system makes it easy to understand how energy is harvested, stored, and used under various conditions. This means that using our products directly delivers education on the nature of electrical energy.

Have a look at this short film, which shows how Sundaya products are being used in Indonesian villages today...

How long will my Sundaya kit last?

Sundaya kit batteries have a useful life of up to 10 years (depending on usage) and most of the other parts have a useful life of up to 20 years.

Are Sundaya products guaranteed?

All of the components in Sundaya kits have been selected for their high quality and long life. All of our production is supervised at our HQ in Indonesia with rigorous quality control. We offer a minimum 6-month complete manufacturer's guarantee on all of our products with some components extending on to 12 months and more.

Sundaya products look and feel great, are they expensive?

At Sundaya our goal is to make exceptionally high quality solar energy products accessible to all. Our designs are beautiful and functional yet extremely affordable. We aim to ensure that cost-efficiency and tasteful design work hand in hand!

How do Sundaya products compare to other energy products?

Our LED lights operate at 25% efficiency, the highest in the world, which maximizes the use you get out of your battery and panel. For a detailed comparison of battery capacity, see the following chart that shows how Sundaya products stack up against other batteries, with information on how many times you can charge a device from various Sundaya kits. Please note: these figures represent total battery capacity. With all power banks, including Sundaya batteries, typically 70% of the battery capacity listed is available for device charging.

What can I charge and run from a Sundaya kit?

The most economical Sundaya kits run LED lamps and can also charge handphones, smartphones, and other small USB-powered devices.

The JouleBox range can charge anything that runs on DC power, including DC lights, ceiling fans, televisions, and computers, and any device that is powered by USB, such as tablets, phones, portable speakers, and more - see the Sundaya accessories and add-ons page for a list of charging cables that are available from Sundaya.

Mac computers, DC water pumps, and other 12-16V DC powered appliances can also run on our JouleBox system. However, the necessary adapters, and the appliances themselves, need to be purchased from other companies. Contact us for our recommendations list.

Can I power anything I want with my Sundaya kit?

No, not everything… Solar power systems for appliances that are running on AC power - including most refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and other appliances and equipment - will most likely require larger, more powerful batteries than a JouleBox, as well as an inverter, to work.

For help in determining whether your renewable energy needs are a match for Sundaya products and / or other solutions, feel free to contact us to arrange a discussion with an Alam Santi consultant through the Alam Santi Consulting Package of your choice.

Sundaya’s engineering team is always behind the scenes developing new innovative products, including, currently, larger batteries and new DC products, which will be added to our plug-and-play product lines once they have been tried and tested.

Can I install my Sundaya kit by myself, or do I need a technician?

Yes, you can! No complicated technical knowledge is needed to install and enjoy Sundaya products. All Sundaya kits are designed as plug-and-play DC systems, with easily interchangeable, safe to handle parts, that are easy to install by anyone. The 12-16V DC electricity that runs through all Sundaya products is safe for everyone; with these products it is not possible to hurt yourself through electrocution.

Each kit includes all the installation materials required to set up and start using kits in a matter of minutes. Anyone (literally anyone) can easily install and enjoy using them right away.

What happens to the materials at the end of their useful lives?

Sundaya takes back materials that are past their useful life, disassembling, refurbishing, and recycling components in the most environmentally friendly manner possible. Simply send them to our factory in Sentul and we will notify you of any returns & recycle value at the time of receipt.

What is DC and AC electricity, and why do Sundaya kits only use DC energy?

DC is Direct Current, and AC is Alternating Current electricity. Most solar energy system components - including all Sundaya products - use only DC systems for safety, accessibility and cost-efficiency.

Currently, the standard, grid-based electricity most people use is 220 Volt Alternating Current (AC), which is dangerous to install and service without a qualified electrician. This standard electricity poses a serious hazard in wet conditions, especially to children.

Interestingly, many of the electronic devices that we use every day, such as phones and computers, run natively on DC electricity. So that means for us to power them with AC electricity like we normally do, we need to use an AC > DC converter (that’s the box like thing generally included with the power cord on devices). This conversion results in a 20% loss of energy each time you use your device.

Meanwhile, a lot of our modern appliances, and grid-connected electricity systems, are built to run on AC. They also use quite a lot of electricity to run. This makes them more difficult (and expensive) to integrate into a DC renewable energy system. Most larger scale solar energy systems use a machine called an inverter to convert solar energy from DC to AC, so that a place that was designed to work on an AC energy supply can work with electricity produced by solar energy. By the way, this conversion also creates a 20% loss in efficiency on all appliances. :(

It all gets even worse if you hook up a DC device or appliance into an AC-wired system that you intend to run off renewable energy! Then you are looking at something like a 40% + energy loss as you convert electricity back and forth.

This is one of the reasons solar energy systems for AC grid connected sites end up being up to double the cost for the same output, for systems that primarily run natively DC devices.
